  6. Can’t say THANK YOU enough for all the hard (& awesome) work you all have done with MATE. For someone with older hardware (but not i486 old) MATE is exactly what I want and its working like a charm with LMDE.

    Thank you all so much.

Long days and pleasant nights everyone.

  8. Oh my God, I just found out about Mate. I hate Gnome3 and Unity. Thank you so very much guys for reviving Gnome2.
But I hope you guys maintain it for security fixes and don’t overbloat it or make drastic changes.

    God bless you guys.

  9. Merci beaucoup!!! Merci encore !!!

  10. I’m using mint 11 in place of ubuntu for convienience etc. Mint 12 was not exactly a vintage release with parallel printer left for me to debug. But this new desktop stuff has me baffeled, should I go KDE or stick with what I get (usually okay) I have a nvida Geforce 8500GT standard drivers and wonder if that’s good for these new desktops? It’s usually a bitch getting nomodeset to liveboot etc and what the heck is 3D and am I using it on mint12? As I wave my mouse across the screen it goes funny at times showing numerous small screens of what are iconized on the bottom of the screen. Can you make it not do that? Like my RAF crew chief said “if it works don’t fix it” I’m a gnome 2 supporter. Ian

  15. HI,

I found Mate very stable and onpar with the quickness of Gnome2.32.
It is my default on my netbook.
Thank you for making the fork a working reality !

  17. thanks a million, billion, trillion, gazillion…from those of us who were getting work done in Gnome2.x only to be interrupted by the maddening hubris of Canonical and Gnome of trying to be like Apple, i.e. Grandmaware. Keep up the great work!!

  28. Might I just say what a fine job you MATE guys have done. I remember trying MATE a while back and it certainly had some teething problems, as to be expected.

Now though, running the latest 1.2 on my Arch setup it’s pretty much like good old Gnome 2. All the applets seem to be there and working which is very impressive and it just…works. Kudos!

GNOME 2 / MATE is the only choice for me at the moment, no matter if I will switch to GNOME 3 or stay with MATE forever, it is an important project as not all of us see any advantages in GNOME 3 (yet).
    Many greetings from germany!

  41. Thank you! It’s wonderful to have a desktop again that is designed for users. Gnome2 became great, Gnome3 was bad but might improve if developers start listening to people’s complaints (but I’m not holding my breath waiting for that!)
Thank you for giving users choice again. Now we just need MATE to be included as standard on various Linux distros :-)
Small question: I’ve seen it written as MATE, Mate and Maté though not yet as MATÉ which do the devlopers prefer?

    • I had a shot at making people say MATÉ a little while ago.. you might have seen it here on this website… and.. it didn’t work :)

Perberos speaks Spanish, Stefano speaks Italian.. so they both pronounce it with the É and don’t care much for the accentuation there. A lot of people already called it MATE (like in English “take care mate”) so it was too late for a change anyway.

In the end of the day, it’s just a name. We’re all thrilled about the project behind it :)

      • I was pleasantly surprised to find out the origin of the name and that it wasn’t as in “take care mate”. Also, it was interesting to find out yerba is a species of holly. It’s not my first pick when I go to the tea shop but it’s in line with the whole plant thing Mint has going.

While I’m at it, I’ve installed the final release and everything’s fine except a few minor issues. Again, great job and thanks.

  42. Congratulations! Well done.

I’m still on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with Gnome 2.30, but I will switch to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with the Mate version that is current at that time before May 2013, when support for my current Ubuntu version will be ceased.

I installed Mate 1.2 already on a brand new computer for a friend of mine, which was too new for 10.04. He hasn’t really noticed much difference from Gnome 2, which is just perfect, since that is what MATE is about: Gnome 2 + enhancements.

I hope to do more Dutch translations soon, but I’m recovering from RSI, so I have to watch out.

Again, great job. Keep it up.

  43. Thanks a million, really: you are giving us more choice than ever, despite of someone else’s blindness in enforcing an unusable and resource-wasting UI. Keep up the good works, and feel free to ask if you need some help :)

Nadie te obliga a usar Mate.

  47. great! thanks a lot!

anyway, wine is still not have it’s own main menu, it is still put into “other”, how to fix this?

  48. Excellent! Upgraded recently and my wife was upset that the interface changed. I found this project and now my wife is very happy again.

  49. Hi folks,
Thanks a lot for maintaining the MATE desktop ! I’m now using it on Ubuntu 12.04 and after a little work it does the job perfectly.
    Keep up guys.

  50. Awesome guys. Thanks for picking up where Gnome 2 should have continued to. Just installed it on my old Dell D600. Rock on!

  51. Nice Work,
Parts of the mate panel are necessary to run docbarx and gnomenu on ubuntu 12.04.
It is also nice that the mate-panel doesn’t conflict with the gnome 3 fallback session.

    Grazie mille !
    =======================================================
    Superb!
My PC with Mate fly, while with Gnome 3 were zombies.

    Thanks a lot!

  57. Gents:

I’m running U_10.04LTS w/GNOME_2.3 and will hang on till the bloody end-of-support April 2013. I have no idea what it even **means** to install U_12.04 substituting GNOME/MATE … let along imagine the tasks to scotch Cannonicals UNITY GUI while installing MATE. Won’t there be added conflicts with poorly supported hardware (scanners) and with certain applications like OO vs OfficeLibre?

The casual Linux user really does not know how to think about this! I guess I could try installing DEBIAN (howl with pain) and MATE over that!

      • “A non-intuitive and unattractive desktop for users, using traditional computing desktop metaphor. ” Is that supposed to be a description of Mate/MATE/MATÉ? I’d say it’s a good description of Gnome 3 and the dreaded Unity.
I had been dreading having to leave Ubuntu 10.04, but now I can do it. I now have “Mubuntu12.04″ on by Grub menu – 12.04 with Mate. It should definitely either be a downloadable option like Kubuntu and Xubuntu or at least included as an option for booting into.
Like so many people I am delighted that someone that can rectify the Gnome3/Unity mess has actually done so.
        Thank you!

  58. Sorry, but do not know where else to put this. I am trying to register for the forum, but I never get the confirmation email. Any help would be appreciated.

  60. This is looking very good indeed, and I believe it is my way forward to Ubuntu 12.04 …and beyond.

Even though I am testing the Ubuntu Studio distro, which comes with XFCE, so neither Unity nor Gnome3 is being forced on me, I still want *my* desktop and way of working as in 10.04/11.04 which has a mental history that goes back over a decade.

I still have to see if all my tweaks are possible, like the single “Ubuntu” menu (not applications…system…places) and tuning with Gnome Color Chooser or equivalent — but I’m on day one still, so lots to find out, and probably lots to learn from your forum.

Keep up the good work :)

  61. Hipp Hipp Hurray!!!!!

Yeahhh. I like it. Killed Windoze 7 on my Lenovo x121 (AMD Version) and installed MINT 13. All things are running out of the box.
An thank’s for supporting MATE Desktop.
Gnome 3 is awfull and pain.

  63. Just wanted to say thanks for the work you’ve have done with the excellent MATE desktop environment. I’ve spent many years using Gnome-2, it’s simple, clean, fast, and gets things done without gimmicks. Personally I’m not convinced on the way Gnome-3 is going, sure it looks pretty and has nice effects etc, but for many *nix user we just want to get the job done. MATE has revived Gnome-2 experience.
Great work so far… please keep it up :)

  64. Thanks for all your hard work. Given my aversion to Gnome 3 and Unity, I’ve very happy to have access to a maintained fork of Gnome 2, and one that is also so visually pleasing. Keep up the good work!

  66. Geez, you guys are the saviors of the true freedom of Linux power (GUI based that is). I couldn’t believe the horrific changes that were made with Unity and (the somewhat better) Gnome3. Xubuntu was an awesome alternative since XFCE has some of the best standard panels that I’ve ever seen. All this crap about “being intuitive” (Unity & Gnome3) is just that, crap. How can it be faster or more productive to have to type even 5 letters to find an installed app if the same can be accomplished with 1 click on the launcher for that app if you have the launcher sitting there, ready to go? Not to mention that the intuitive search can be frustrating for anyone who lacks keyboard skills as well as searches that involve personally compiled third party apps. Gnome3 and Unity took the Linux freedom away from us … but the developers of Mate are giving it right back !!! You’re doing a Super awesome job, keep up the exellent work. Now if only we could get those panel backgrounds to be 100% transparent (left/right edges, workspace backgrounds, etc.)

  67. Got just a difficult phase behind me:
Now 20 years programming under MS-DOS / WIN, last two weeks again rootkits, rogue and trojans on the developement system despite of firewall, avira – coming from the LAN family computers…
This finally was the straw to break the camel’s back:

Ubuntu 12.04: SHOCK!! Wtf is that? Where’s the system settings, where the file manager, where the user rights settings….
Until today, when I found the existance of MATE, and the possibility to exchange the Unity-Desktop by it.
GREAT, Thank you! (With that I’m just starting to like Linux…)

    J

  68. I am using Arch Linux + Mate. It’s an amazing base+de as far as i know. I’ve been using XFCE and LXDE since ubuntu came with unity crap. Now everythings ok. Thank you for your all efforts and good work.

  70. The word “mate” in Spanish has no orthographic accent mark. It is the A what is stressed. In English, it should be pronounced “MAH-te”; MA as in MArs, MAma or MAfia, and TE as in TEll, TEnnis or TEnt.

  71. Many thanks for the Gnome2-Revival and congratulations to the new start of Mate-Desktop. I’m using Debian 7 and work with Mate for around 2 weeks and it makes fun again to work with Linux. Please keep it alive.

  72. I am someone who tried absolutely all possible alternatives of desktops in Linux and I even bought new hardware to speed up the slowest desktop and I will tell you this: Nothing is so good like MATE!

Keep this evolutionary work at this sane and rational level. Don’t let eye candy emotions trick you like they did with KDE and GNOME community. Keep solid rock!

  73. Well done! Keep up the good work. Thank you. The next round is on me, Err uh, well maybe not a whole round. Can I catch you one at a time over the next 40 years? OK thanks :)

  74. Naw, this stuff sucks, I threw away my desktops and laptops to run Linux exclusively on my Xoom tablet, so I got no need for MATE. Gnome3 FTW!
