  1. Mate is great!
I upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to 12.04 a couple months back and it’s been headaches and sadness ever since. Unity is awful, Gnome-3 in 3D won’t run in my preferred environment (TigerVNC, floating desktop), Gnome-3 fallback mode is limited, lacks visually reasonable themes, and looks like a weak sister going forward, and Xfce (which I switched to) is a step down from Gnome-2 and is suffering from lack of interoperability with Gnome-3 utilities, most notably the Gnome applets (which used to work with Xfce via an adapter).
And then I discovered MATE — Zowie!! Thanks to you all! Gotta go look for the Donate button…

  2. Thank you so much. I have been homeless ever since this f*in “Unity” (how ironic a name for this shit that has been pushed on us in a dictatorial way) came upon us – I just learnt about you and am downloading the img now. Can’t wait to have my desktop hacked back to sanity!

  3. If I install install mate-core, will I need mate-desktop-environment aswell, or is this optional? What does mate-desktop-environment install?

      • This page isn’t a place to ask questions and get answers. No where does it indicate that support questions should be filed here. In fact, we specifically listed the various locations to seek help. Did you try the mailing list, one of the various forums, or irc?

You obviously didn’t even bother to look at the wiki, because it cleary answers your question.

          • I can understand how you could expect this page is a place to get support, because although it directs you to support resources, there is the ability to comment on this page. I admit that while I wonder why you did not check out any of the resources listed above and instead proceeeded to the comments section at the bottom of the page, it is not clear and the page should not have commenting enabled, but it does rather clearly direct us to support resources on the page. That being said, you are right; if you mistakenly post a question here, someone should at least answer, and/or direct you to irc or otherwise so you can get an answer. However, after three days without an answer, you really shouldn’t get so upset. We all have lives and while I’m sure your question is important, there is no need to use such strong language. Especially not when someone like Steve tries to help you, which is what you were expecting in the first place.

  4. Strange thing happend: i’m using mint 13 with native mate enviroment, i also installed kde for trying, but most times i’m using MATE, after KDE update came on update menager, my icon set changet into the one from kde, and files menager became dolphin, even when im logged in in mate sesion. Can i set mate to use its own default theme, and programs back without reinstall, or removing kde?

  5. I`m pretty new to all of his and have had Helena 8 which i find is now no longer operating….due to the fact I had no uploads, security etc. Went into Xchat, asked them what to do. I have downloaded Linux Mint 13 Maya on to a disk, can find the disk in my downloads….but nothing has changed…..start up still shows the old Helena…..Please….what do i do?

  6. I followed the instructions with installing MATE on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and got an error when installing MATE’s archive keyring.

It did install, but I should not have got an error. This rules out installing MATE on a production server for me.

  7. good idea if you add “remove separator” option. i take little time to do that…by editing the menu conf file :/ and restart MATE XD

  8. Dear Mate team, thanks very much for your work, it’s really a joy using this good old, stable, beautiful and functional desktop!

  9. Since Gnome 3 was forced on us, I have been using XFCE which I have come to like and respect a lot as an environment. Curiosity got the better of me recently and I installed Mint 14 with Mate. It was like running in to a long lost and almost forgotten friend.

Thank you for all the hard work that has gone in to this project.

  10. Perfect work!

After that Ubuntu decide to go with ugly and slow Unity and Gnom3, I try Linux Mint 14, and now I work only on Mint14 at home and on work!

    Thx!

  12. Like it. Using Debian testing 64 bit for quite some time now. Till KDE 4 I had KDE, till GNOME 3 I had GNOME, then xfce. Now with the latest update MATE is really good. Does everything I want it to do, stable and reliable. Good stuff.

  13. Mate 1.6 is very fine. But where is mate-help ? When i put F1 key, is error mesage – not mate-help process. I have a Debian 7 and full version mate 1.6. I installed all packets mate :-/

  14. will there be an install for mate on raspiban for the raspberry pi… it would seem to be a good fit since the raspberry pi needs a lightweight desktop.. but it is an arm v6 processor …
