Pingback: Linux Mint 13 – MATE Edition – is a supreme success!
MATE is quite possibly the best desktop environment to exist. Even better than Explorer. If I ever get coLinux working on my Windows machine, I will definitely be sticking MATE on it.
I Love MATE! Thank you so much for picking it up, dusting it off and revitalizing it! I plan to stick with Linux Mint MATE edition for the long haul. I’ve used many distributions over my 10 years using linux (practically exclusively!) and have finally found a distro I call home — As long as MATE is still actively developed and supported by Mint. Love you! Thanks!
Brittany
Yes, I like MATE too! Yesterday I try Cinnamon and I think, that MATE is better and more perspective for the most tasks
my first linux is ubuntu 10.04 and its used gnome 2, so when i upgrade it to 12.04 who use unity i very dissapoint… i like the DE of ubuntu 10.04 and i find mate. and now i build my own linux from 0, and i used mate for DE….
thanks for the Mate Developer …….
I have now become a Mint MATE user and have abandoned my old distro as they abandoned Gnome 2. Thanks to the MATE team for ensuring we can get on with our work and thanks to Mint for caring.
Hi Guys. I love it that you’re keeping this direction alive. I am very disappointed in the direction Gnome 3 is taking. I have to admit I hate the name MATE but I love what you’re doing. Keep up the good work, and I may even find myself helping you out! It’s important work – don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.
Why would you hate the Mate name. Mate, the drink, is very common in South America.
It’s the way it “sounds” to me in the local english dialect where I live – unpleasant. However; In a number of Anglo-Saxson countries it’s colloquial for friend. Perhaps that’s fitting since it did save us from desktop purgatory.
In any case I liked the product enough that I ported it to my favourite flavour of linux. Almost ready for prime time on that distribution. https://code.google.com/p/crux-mate/
I like the mate in the morning, because I am from Argentina – joke- but I use GNU-Linux with KDE, soon test Mate in my OS, I like the screens an the name mate
greetings
MATE desktop environmen is currently the best of all.
Pingback: تاپیک مخصوص میزکار Gnome 2.X و Mate
Thanks a lot for reviving this good old gnome. I just installed mate after several months of xfce fallback, and it just feeld right!
Hear, hear!
thank you SO much for filling a need for those of us who used Gnome2.x
Unity and Gnome3.x are destined for the dustbin!
I love mate, kde was an alternative from gnome 3 and unity but I am not an expert in KDE to modify and make it how I want, mate is just the awesome env that just works thank you.
Thank you for your work.MATE is fun to use and is very user friendly.

I love MATE, It’s can be configured to look and function just like gnome2, Everyone knows gnome shell and unity is a failure and thats what makes linux mint MATE so popular, You guys keep up the good work with this wonderful UI, LONG LIVE GNOME 2/MATE!
Oh yeah!!! great team
you work is important for the community linux!
live MATE!!!
thanks for this project
I did a fresh Arch Linux install few days ago, specifically to try out MATE with it. I got really surprised on how much this project has evolved and grown. Thanks for this project, to everyone involved with it. And to the founder Perberos a really special greet: Muchas gracias!, por revivir este entorno y prolongarlo. Saludos desde Chile
Is that a japanese flag on Perberos? Hes is from Rio Negro, Argentina!. Please fix it. Thanks!
I’m working with several DEs at home and work.
-I tried Unity and found it not suitable to a production environment.
-I tried to Gnome Shell with the same result.
-I tried Gnome 3(Pseudo gnome classic).Nice, but I still didn’t find I was looking for.
-I tried MATE:Try to guess what I am using right know.
How did I make my choice?
-Gnome 2 worked quite well.It was simple, fast, intuitive, light, very stable and I know it very well.Which other DE is just like that?
-I like and need to keep working in any situation.I need to use the last technology available on an interface I know and recognize. What DE can offer me all these things?
-I like the project that start directly from the community. There is no better developer than someone who knows and has your same issues.I love when people look for a revutionary solution to a known issue(e.g. a forced migration to another (unwanted) DE.What’s project can I join to be one of them?
The answer to all this questions is only one:MATE!!!
Hello there,
I love the work you guys have done and eagerly await the next release. Just a few quick things, the link to the source on the install page links to 1.2 not 1.4… Should probably just link the release folder rather than a specific one… Also I’m looking for another project and would love to put something together a bit more unified for this site… Maybe something based on Drupal like the Elementary OS website? With bug tracking and forums built in? Let me know if that’s something that interests you guys… Obviously it would be for free.
All the best
Best, very happy using this desktop in my computer.
Greats!
I tried to upgrade to Ubuntu 12.04 several times before because my 10.04 started falling apart, Got fed up with Unity after less than a day every time, to the point of downright hating it.
Now, with MATE, I’ve managed to get rid of most of the annoying features that made 12.04 what it is. I couldn’t be happier…
Big Up!
gracias por este magnifico fork de gnome2 , lo uso en Arch y va de cine
suerte y salu2
Thank you!
Sooo much!
Thank you so much. Mate is awesome.
I do not know what kind of users the people of Gnome 3 and Unity have in mind… certainly not people that want to do actual work.
Thanks Mate!
Hi
Trying to install mate from your repo, but there is so much build error.
I fix them one by one but I stuck at libunique build.
It treated warnings as errors and always fails

Thank you so much. I have two computers; I finally got used to Gnome-shell on my laptop and got it working properly. It’s allmost usable for people who actually work with their computers. But in my desktop I have tried Ubuntu, OpenSuse and Fedora and couldn’t manage to get them work nicely using Gnome because of my old ati card.
I’ve never used Linux-Mint before but I will be. Mate solved all the problems with my graphic card and the system is working flawlessly. Now I have a computer I can work with and feel confortable with.
Thank you very much to the Mate team.
Thanks, MATE es very good.
MATE is amazing! Keep up the good work – please!!!!!
I am once again able to use compiz for functionality as well as eye-candy, and my desktop is mine again. Bravo!
Thank you very much for you wonderful work. Mate is superb.
I was stuck with my old Ubuntu 11.04 in order to have a working desktop environment able to suit my needs. I tried Unity and Gnome Shell several times but, honestly, I find them impossible to use for tasks like software developing.
Mate is what I really need : fast, easy and highly configurable! And it is also nice-looking
I wish I could give each one of you fellows a gentle kiss on the brow for your efforts. Bless you, bless you. Please, keep it up! MATE for the future!
Thank you guys.
I really can’t get used to Gnome 3 and other similar fancy, full of bugs, incomplete environments
I’ve tried for too long to find the right Desktop Environment and then there was MATE, Wow!
Proszę rozwijajcie MATE i nie porzucajcie go !
I hope you Linux Mint Team will not abandon MATE someday !!!
We can implement the autoarrangement of icons in the launch bar? Thank’s
I have been using Gnome for 6-7 years now and It is sad to see recent development of desktop enviroments (gnome 3, unity etc). But MATE come to rescue. It again makes the desktop/laptops usable. It looks beautiful and works like a desktop should work. I am saving money from my expense to donate to Mate and Linux mint.
Thanks a lot!
have been eagerly awaiting a fork of gnome 2 since gnome 3 came out, installed mate on F18, and am very happy!
long live Mate!
am considering joining the development, I’ll figure out where to apply.
Hello, yester day i switchted to mate desktop and it felt like coming home! Thank you so much for your work!
After they introduced gnome 3 and unity almost simultanously, i used xfce. I won’t say anything more about the former two because there’s nothing good to say imo.Xfce is a nice desktop. But i missed many functions from gnome 2. Like i said it feels like coming home. Thank you!
Mate guys,
Please do keep on the good work on Mate – WE LOVE IT!
Thanks,
Dave
Unity and Gnome Shell – politically correct Desktops for the dumbed down illiterate masses.
MATE – the sensible intelligent desktop.
Thank you very much.

I just want to say you’ve done an amazing job. Mate is as close to the perfect desktop as you can get. Simple ,but not too simple to get annoying. Full featured, but not too full featured to get annoying. I’ve heard people say that mate is outdated, and has nowhere to go if it sticks with traditional paradigms. But it’s like the old saying “if in ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Mate is amazing the way it is, and as long as it stays up to date and compatible with modern software I will happily continue using it. Mate is for people who actually want to use their computer, rather than just look at it. Cheers to the Mate team.
