The standard Debian settings don’t allow a sudo command. So either you have to install the package “sudo” and to add the needed users to the sudo-group e.g. with the tool “users-admin”. Or you have to use the command “su” before you enter all the given lines (without “sudo”) and “exit” in the end.

1.) I can’t find the mdm (display manager). That one would be very nice
2.) As mate-desktop debends on libmatenotify, it would be usefull if it also depended on mate-notification-daemon

Hi folks: I cleaned my apt cache and then put the mate repository into sources.list by hand, erasing two lines that had been automatically installed–one for the mate repository and one for the mate repository sources. I also added a carriage return after the repository line (which wasn’t in the sources.list). I was able to install MATE just fine.
Only problem: I’m using a large external monitor with the HP laptop on which I now have MATE installed. In MATE, the default is mirrored monitors, which means the external monitor has low resolution (everything looks odd). When I try to shut down the laptop’s monitor & increase the resolution on the external monitor, nothing happens. Ubuntu is fine w/ the monitors. Seems like MATE doesn’t have the right drivers for me yet. I’ll just wait & see.

I installed mate 1.4 on ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I got the mojo back ….Since the introduction of unity on Ubuntu I stopped using linux and also stopped wasting time on linux. Once I heard mate 1.4 is available I installed mate 1.4 and it is really cool…
I was very satisfied with what I saw when I installed Mate on Debian Wheezy.
Everyone, please e-mail the various distribution providers and ask them to include Mate packages and Mate versions of their OS distributions. I bet that more people will want Mate rather than migrating to gnome 3! Linus, have you seen Mate yet? Get your old desktop back, yeah!
I understand that ghostbsd (currently installs gnome 2 and lxde desktops for freebsd) will have a Mate version soon, offering YET MORE CHOICE which is what I bet we all want.
I also put a link for Mate at the end of my ‘fixing gnome 3 to make it usable’ page. Thanks again for doing what I probably would have had to do myself (fork the gnome 2 panel to get my desktop back). I especially like the ability to horizontally position the panel icons wherever I want them, crammed together so I can fit more on it.

Btw, have you considered switching from Ubuntu to Debian? Is way more stable, and has better defined package dependecies. I know do remeber about LMDE, but after a while I haven’t received any updates
I’m aware that Debian has long release cycles: but you could use Debian testing a a base (still better than Ubuntu’s packages, IMHO)
Can Mint-Menu be added to the Mate repos?
I’ve installed Mate on a new Debian 7 system but can’t find Mint-Menu, I can only assume it is in the mint repos and not the mate repos.

You might want to update the install instructions for Fedora. Simply modifying the number from 16 to 17 does not work.
The Arch repo url is Server = http://packages.mate-desktop.org/repo/archlinux/$arch
you shoule remove the mate/ from this page.
And the groups name isn’t mate-extra but mate-extras

MDM is in the Linux Mint Repositories.

The prozess stopps with “ubuntu 12.4.1 release i386 /cdrom/ insert .
But when I insert the CD, it dosn´t continue. there’e allways the same

You sir, are my hero! Thank you for the great work you have done, and for providing packages to other distro’s (I’m installing MATE now on Debian).
Btw, have you considered switching from Ubuntu to Debian? Is way more stable, and has better defined package dependecies. I know do remeber about LMDE, but after a while I haven’t received any updates
I’m aware that Debian has long release cycles: but you could use Debian testing a a base (still better than Ubuntu’s packages, IMHO)

Can Mint-Menu be added to the Mate repos?
I’ve installed Mate on a new Debian 7 system but can’t find Mint-Menu, I can only assume it is in the mint repos and not the mate repos.
